9 days / 8 nights
3 nights in Bangkok
3 nights on the E&O
2 nights in Singapore
These contrasting cities epitomise South East Asia. Golden-spired temples and glittering palaces of Bangkok contrast with modern Singapore, bursting with atmosphere - and the Eastern & Oriental Express offers the ideal introduction to the excitement of both.
Thursday - Saturday : Bangkok
Arrive in Bangkok, where you stay for three nights at your chosen hotel. Thailand's capital city offers spectacular temples, colourful markets and a superb range or restaurants offering the very best in Thai cuisine. Optional tours, such as a visit to the wonderful Grand Palace, or the home of Thai Silk - Jim Thomson's House - are available, please ask for details.
(Breakfast Included. Overnights in Bangkok).
Sunday - Tuesday : Eastern & Oriental Express
Depart from Bangkok's Hualampong station early in the evening. After being welcomed on board the gold and green-liveried carriages, settle into your compartment. Dinner is served as the train leaves the city behind and travels into the Thai countryside. Retire to your compartment, now transformed into a bedroom by your personal steward.
(Breakfast, dinner included).
Monday : Eastern & Oriental Express
Early risers will catch the excitement of the train making its way along the trestle viaduct from Wang Po. Later, arrive at River Kwai Bridge station, where you disembark for a cruise on the river on board a local raft. During the cruise, a local historian provides a brief overview of the history of the Thailand-Burma railway and the bridge. Disembark for a visit to the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre and, for those who wish, the Don Rak war cemetery. Rejoin the train for lunch and a relaxing afternoon followed by dinner and a further night on board.
(Breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
Tuesday : Eastern & Oriental Express
Brunch is served before arriving in Butterworth, where you cross by coach on the local ferry to Penang Island. Your visit includes a trip to the Kho Kongsi clan house, a trishaw ride and a drink at the charming Eastern & Oriental Hotel. Return to the train, perhaps visiting the observation car before dinner and a final night on board.
(Breakfast, brunch and dinner included).
Wednesday - Thursday : Singapore
Arrive in Singapore, where you stay for two nights. This contemporary city with its spectacular buildings is enhanced by touches of its colonial past. There is much to see and do - beautiful botanical gardens, museums, galleries and, of course, shopping - which is practically a national pastime.
Friday : Departure
