Star Ratings and Room Categories

Star ratings are the official Hungarian classifications. All prices shown in individual holiday itineraries include a room in the standard category indicated. Rooms may overlook a courtyard, garden or street unless a view is specifically stated. Upgrades to higher room categories, suites and Danube-facing rooms are available on request at most hotels. Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, Budapest

★★★★★

Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest

Five Star

The Gresham Palace is one of the finest Art Nouveau buildings in the world, and one of the finest hotels in Europe. It stands directly facing the Chain Bridge on the Pest bank of the Danube, and the view from its Danube-facing suites across the river to the hills of Buda and the Royal Palace is one that guests remember for the rest of their lives. Built in 1906 for the Gresham Life Assurance Company and meticulously restored before reopening as a Four Seasons hotel in 2004, it has earned the Forbes Five Star award for ten consecutive years and remains the only hotel in Hungary to hold this distinction.

The building itself repays careful attention. The entrance hall's Zsolnay ceramic floor, the peacock gate of wrought iron and the stained glass windows by Miksa Roth are among the finest examples of Hungarian Art Nouveau craftsmanship anywhere. The 160 rooms and 19 suites are individually designed, many with balconies overlooking the Danube. Kollázs Brasserie and Bar, the hotel's principal restaurant, has been recognised by the Michelin Guide and overlooks the Chain Bridge through tall windows. MUZSA, the lobby bar, serves afternoon tea on hand-painted Herend Porcelain to the accompaniment of live piano.

The spa, fitness centre and rooftop terrace complete a hotel that is simply without equal in Budapest. If you are travelling to Budapest on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, and cost is not the primary consideration, this is where you should stay.

Aria Hotel Budapest

★★★★★

Aria Hotel Budapest

Five Star

The Aria Hotel is a music-themed boutique hotel occupying a beautifully converted historic building a short walk from St Stephen's Basilica in the heart of Pest. Its 49 rooms and suites are arranged across four wings, each dedicated to a different musical genre: classical, opera, jazz and contemporary. Rooms are named after iconic artists and composers including Maria Callas, Frank Sinatra, Mozart and Jimi Hendrix, and each is designed to reflect the character of its namesake, with iPads preloaded with themed music libraries and high-quality audio systems as standard. The hotel is a member of the Library Hotel Collection.

Every guest receives complimentary breakfast each morning and the afternoon Wine and Cheese reception, held from 4pm to 6pm in the glass-covered inner courtyard with live music, is one of the more civilised features of any hotel in Budapest. The High Note SkyBar on the rooftop terrace offers some of the finest panoramic views of the Budapest skyline, with the dome of St Stephen's Basilica immediately below and the hills of Buda visible in the distance. The Harmony Spa has an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. The Liszt Restaurant serves Hungarian and European dishes.

The Aria is a genuinely distinctive hotel, and one of the best in its category in Central Europe. Its position close to the Basilica and the State Opera House makes it excellent for those combining a stay in Budapest with the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

BoHo Hotel Budapest

★★★★

BoHo Hotel Budapest

Small Luxury Hotels

The BoHo Hotel is a four-star boutique property and member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, located in the Jozsefvaros district in the heart of Budapest. It offers a quieter and more neighbourhood-focused experience of the city than some of the grander addresses on the Danube, while still being well within reach of all the principal sights. The Jewish Quarter and its celebrated ruin bars, Szechenyi Baths in the City Park, and the central boulevards of Pest are all accessible on foot or by a short metro ride.

The hotel features 64 spacious and individually designed rooms, each with a strong sense of style and attention to detail. The spa, fitness centre and garden are among the amenities that set it apart from more conventional four-star properties. A restaurant serves good food and the bar is a convivial place to spend an evening. The atmosphere throughout is calm and unpretentious, with the focus on comfort and personal service rather than spectacle.

The BoHo is a good choice for travellers who prefer a more residential character in their hotel, or who want to spend time exploring Budapest's Jewish Quarter and the ruin bar scene without the price premium of a Danube-fronting address. It pairs well with a journey on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express for those whose priority is an authentic Budapest experience rather than a grand hotel view.
