Hotel Le Meurice, Paris

★★★★★ Palace

Hotel Le Meurice

Palace Hotel

Le Meurice is one of Paris's great palace hotels, a classification reserved for properties that represent the very highest standard of French hospitality and are of exceptional cultural and historical significance. It faces the Tuileries Gardens on the Rue de Rivoli, positioned between Place de la Concorde and the Louvre, which places it at the heart of one of the finest approaches to the city's museums and galleries. Since 1835 it has been the address in Paris for royalty, artists and discerning travellers. Salvador Dali spent several decades here each winter.

The 160 rooms and suites are decorated across seven floors, each floor with its own distinct style evoking the courts of Louis XVI, while remaining genuinely comfortable rather than merely decorative. All rooms feature marble bathrooms with both shower and bath. The Restaurant le Meurice, overlooking the Tuileries, offers fine dining of the highest order. Restaurant Le Dali, named for the hotel's most celebrated long-term guest and fitted out beneath a monumental canvas, offers a more relaxed alternative. A Winter Garden and extensive health and fitness centre complete the offer.

Note: Restaurant le Meurice is closed at weekends, on selected public holidays, and for one month during July and August. Le Dali remains open throughout.
Hotel San Regis, Paris

★★★★★

Hotel San Regis

Five Star

The San Regis is a privately owned five-star hotel close to the Champs-Elysees and the Grand Palais, in the 8th arrondissement. It has the atmosphere of a private home rather than a grand hotel, which is precisely its appeal. The building is an elegant 19th-century mansion and the 43 rooms and suites each have their own individual character: fine materials, a variety of colours and carefully chosen objets d'art, so that no two rooms feel the same. The quality of the finishes and the personal attention of the staff are the things guests tend to remember most.

The restaurant serves a refined menu drawing on classic French cuisine, updated with good creative instincts and a commitment to quality produce. The intimate lounge and bar are well-suited to a quiet evening. The hotel's size means that it can offer a level of personal service that is difficult to replicate in a larger establishment, and its location gives easy access to the Champs-Elysees, the Grand Palais, the Musee d'Orsay and the Seine.

Hotel Castille Paris, Rue Cambon

★★★★★

Hotel Castille Paris

Five Star

The Castille stands on Rue Cambon in the 1st arrondissement, the very street where Coco Chanel established her first atelier. The hotel's immediate neighbours include the Chanel headquarters, and Dior, Balmain, Celine and Louboutin are within a short walk. It is an address that suits anyone with an interest in Paris fashion, and during Fashion Week the hotel becomes one of the most sought-after addresses in the city. The Louvre, the Palais Royal, Place Vendome and the Palais Garnier opera house are all within easy reach on foot.

The 108 rooms and suites occupy two wings of the building, each with a distinct character: one in contemporary style, the other in classic French and Venetian style. The L'Assaggio restaurant, with a menu by Michelin-starred chef Ugo Alciati led by Executive Chef Marco Terenghi, is among the better Italian restaurants in Paris. In spring and summer, dining moves to the inner courtyard with its original early 20th-century frescoes. The hotel traces its heritage to the 18th century, when the building served as a private residence.

Pavillon des Lettres, Paris

★★★★

Pavillon des Lettres

Four Star

The Pavillon des Lettres is a literary hotel in the 8th arrondissement, just off the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore and close to the Elysee Palace. Its 26 rooms are each named for a celebrated author, from Baudelaire and Zola to Ibsen and Kafka, with extracts from the named author's work printed on the walls and the decoration designed to reflect the spirit of their writing. It is a genuinely original concept, and the execution is considerably more elegant than the description might suggest: the rooms are quietly beautiful, the atmosphere calm and intelligent, and the location gives access to some of the finest streets and galleries in Paris.

The Pavillon des Lettres is from the same ownership as the Pavillon de la Reine in the Marais. It has a lounge bar and a small library, both well-suited to the hotel's character. The Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore, with its concentration of luxury houses and art galleries, is immediately outside, and Place de la Concorde, the Grand Palais and the Champs-Elysees are all within a few minutes' walk. Miromesnil Metro station is around 600 metres away.

Pavillon de la Reine, Place des Vosges, Paris

★★★★

Pavillon de la Reine

Four Star

The Pavillon de la Reine is tucked behind a discreet gateway on the northern colonnade of the Place des Vosges in the Marais, and offers something very rare in central Paris: absolute silence. The 17th-century mansion is draped in Virginia creeper that changes with the seasons, and the interior, designed by Didier Benderli of Kerylos Interieurs, combines exposed beams, stone floors and contemporary warmth in a way that feels genuinely French without being in any way museum-like. It is named after Anne of Austria, who once resided in the wing separating the building from the square.

The 56 rooms and suites are all individually decorated, some with high ceilings, others with the characteristic beamed ceilings of a Marais hotel particulier, and several are duplex suites of considerable size and character. Free spa access for all guests includes a hot tub, hammam and fitness centre. The restaurant Anne, led by Michelin-starred chef Thibault Sombardier, offers refined French cooking in a velvet-clad library setting in winter and a hidden garden courtyard in summer. Free private underground parking is available. The Victor Hugo house is steps away; the Bastille is a five-minute walk.

Hotel Le Senat, Saint-Germain-des-Pres, Paris

★★★

Hotel Le Senat

Three Star Deluxe

Le Senat is a boutique hotel in Saint-Germain-des-Pres on the Left Bank, one minute's walk from the Luxembourg Gardens. The building dates from the 18th century and Emile Zola lived here in 1866, a biographical detail that suits the hotel's neighbourhood well. The 41 rooms and suites combine contemporary decoration with marble bathrooms, and a number of rooms have balconies or private terraces, two of the duplex terrace rooms offering panoramic views across the Paris rooftops. The hotel has a breakfast room and bar; there is no full restaurant, but Saint-Germain has more good restaurants and wine bars per street than almost any other part of Paris.

Le Senat's location places it perfectly for exploring the Left Bank: the Musee d'Orsay, the Musee Rodin, the Odeon theatre and the Sorbonne are all within comfortable walking distance, as are the antique dealers of the Carrefour de la Croix-Rouge and the literary cafes of Saint-Germain. The Luxembourg RER station, a short walk away, provides a direct connection to Charles de Gaulle Airport. The hotel is a thoughtful choice for those who prefer a quieter, more residential Paris experience to the grandeur of the Right Bank palace hotels.
