Rovos Rail - Cape Town to Dar Es Salaam 2024/2025
16 days / 15 nights
This epic 16-day journey travels through South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania and is one of the most famous train journeys in the world.
Departing Cape Town, Rovos Rail heads north to the historic village of Matjiesfontein, a tiny village on the fringe of the Great Karoo. Founded in 1884 by legendary railway man, James Douglas Logan, it is a tribute to the early Karoo, the Anglo-Boer War and Queen Victoria's England. Further along the route visit the diamond town of Kimberley, home of the "Big Hole", a once-operational diamond mine, which descends a staggering 840m below the earth. Day three sees you arriving into the capital city of Pretoria for short tours followed by two nights in the Madikwe Game Reserve. Your journey continues through Botswana and on into Zimbabwe where you will spend a night at the Victoria Falls Hotel.
After crossing the bridge over the mighty Zambezi River, the train joins the Tazara line in Zambia and continues to Chisimba Falls where you can take part in a bush walk. From there the 'Pride of Africa' climbs the escarpment to the Tanzanian border then descends into the Great Rift Valley negotiating the tunnels, switchbacks and viaducts on its descent. Climbing again, it crosses the Selous Game Reserve - the largest in Africa, before arriving into the bustling city of Dar Es Salaam the following day.
Please note that depending upon the railway's capacity this journey could be routed northwards through Beitbridge and Zimbabwe.

Plunging over the lip of the Victoria Falls is the largest body of falling water on earth. The mighty Zambezi, fourth longest river in Africa, is about 2kms wide above the falls and cascades dramatically over a precipice 1.6km in length and 108m at its deepest, compressing the vast volume of water into a chasm 50m wide. The sound can be deafening, the aspect magnificent and the memory indelible. In autumn, the spray is so great it inhibits photography while in spring the seasonal flow considerably reduces leaving large slabs of brown basalt exposed on the lip.
