Frequently Asked Questions
About the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is composed of original 1920s and 1930s Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits carriages, each painstakingly restored to its original elegance. The Art Deco interiors include marquetry panels, Lalique glass and bespoke silverware that have been repaired and restored using period techniques. Each carriage is individually decorated and no two cabins are the same.
From the moment you board at the Gare de l'Est in Paris, a personal steward attends to your cabin and your every need. Breakfast and afternoon tea come to your compartment. Lunch and dinner are served in one of the three restaurant cars by Italian waiters. The Bar Car, the social heart of the train, is famous for its cocktails and the atmosphere that has drawn royalty, celebrities and writers to it since the 1920s. In the evening, dressing for dinner is very much part of the experience, and the combination of exceptional food, extraordinary surroundings and the company of fellow travellers from around the world makes for an evening that is very difficult to forget.
The train operates from mid-March to December. Fares include all meals. The carriages are original and some limitations of the 1920s design remain, most notably that the Historic Twin Cabins share facilities rather than having private bathrooms. This is part of the authentic character of the train and adds to rather than detracts from the experience for most guests.
